All About Toothpaste

Often, toothpaste is something that many who go to a Eugene Oregon dentist will hear a lot about. Toothpaste is very important, and there are so many to choose from. You might wonder the difference between each of these. Well, you’re in luck, for you’re about to learn what each type of toothpaste does, and each of the pros and cons of each, and why you might choose one over another.

The first, and ultimate the best kind for many people, is the fluoridated kind. This is the toothpaste that you typically will see in stores, and this is what accounts for about 90% of the toothpaste sales in the country, and often, they’re used to help fight tooth decay, and they’ve been proven to do so. Fluoride is an important ingredient in this, for not only does it strengthen the enamel of the teeth, but it will also bring back minerals to the teeth, rebuilding them even if they have a tiny amount of decay.

A children’s toothpaste has a bit less fluoride inside of it, because often there is the risk of a child having too much fluoride. Not only that, it has less abrasives in the cleaning compounds, which help to prevent irritation in sensitive teeth. They also come in a lot of different flavors as well, making it a lot more fun to use. You should use these if you have a child, and if you have a child under 18 months or so, you should make sure that you do get one that’s perfect for their teeth at that stage of development.

There are also toothpastes created to help fight the stains that are there because of smoking. Often, these have more abrasives that will target the darker stains, and while it does work, it can also damage the enamel of the teeth if you’re using a hard-bristled toothbrush, so make sure that it’s soft-bristled before you begin.

Herbal toothpaste is another option for those who don’t want a bunch of chemicals and want a general sort of experience. It is a much more forgiving option for those that are sensitive to the additives because they don’t contain the active ingredients that other toothpastes might have, such as the chemicals that might make it unpleasant. Often, they are only using natural ingredients, which also makes them biodegradable. There are some that contain a small amount of fluoride as well, but not enough to irritate. They also have them without fluoride, but they won’t prevent against tooth decay if you do use it. These should be considered only if you’re really sensitive to the ingredients and you don’t want to feel the irritation that a traditional toothpaste causes you.

Whitening toothpaste exists as well. These are fluoridated as well, and while they’re not as effective as professional whitening, it will get rid of surface stains with the abrasive there. It will not totally change the color of your teeth, but it can help get rid of a chunk of the surface discoloration, so that when you do get them cleaned, you can have a much whiter smile. There is some caution however to using these, and you should keep them in mind. Some of these do include chemicals that can be very sensitive, so make sure that if you are sensitive, consult your Eugene Oregon dentist for further help.

Finally, there is toothpaste for sensitive teeth. This is for those that feel it when they eat or drink hot or cold foods or drinks. Sensitivity can sometimes also be there because of the harsher chemicals, so this can help with the discomfort. It can also get rid of holds that are in the teeth as well, helping to protect the nerves. These take a bit of time to work though, so if you do use them, make sure to not think it’ll immediately change your teeth, because it probably won’t.

All of these various toothpastes are here to help you improve your overall oral health. Choose one that best fits you, that helps you improve your overall health and wellness, and from there, do make sure to use it every day for best results.
